Human Environmental Impact

“Hurry, hurry, bring the camera quick”. Yelling to my sister because I know we both would never want to miss this. “There’s a Tornado touching down, get out here”! Besides seeing my family, being able to witness nature’s fury in the form of a tornado has always been a dream. Top soil from the flat plains being kicked up and flowing with the wind as if it were a swarm of locusts approaching on the overwhelming Kansas horizon. It started about two hundred feet up, as a dark thunderous, magnificent mass of spiraling clouds. All the way to were it touched down and started tossing anything in its path miles away into neighboring towns. This was the very first experience I had with Mother Nature and the magnitude of her devastation. It’s something I only want to witness miles away.

Ever since my experience in Kansas with a tornado that was recorded as a magnitude F-3 Tornado. The weather, our planet everything about it fascinates me. I can’t even begin to understand how things like tornados, tsunamis’, hurricanes, and most importantly of all Global Warming. It’s a true fact of life on this planet and we definitely need to start thinking about our global climate change and the variables that affect it. “The increasing emissions of carbon dioxide, CFCs’, nitrous oxide, and methane along with ruination of the world’s tropical rain forests, which help absorb harmful carbon dioxide excess, are expected the throw the climate into a state of precarious imbalance in the next century if these trends are not reversed, experts warn” (Roan).

One thing is certain. “The release of manmade pollutants into the atmosphere has come about so fast and so furiously in the past century that the future of the earth can no longer be reliably determined” (Roan). One huge reason why Global Warming isn’t accepted by some skeptics because scientists are analyzing past weather patterns to predict future weather patterns. We aren’t actually feeling the earth getting warmer, but in time the problem will get worse. In the form of Natural Disasters, things like; droughts, Flooding, extremely cold winters, and blazing summers. Whatever series of events to occur on our unpredictable planet, we must work to stop the problem before it’s too late.

If you’ve ever traveled cross country, through big business cities you tend to notice a trend. No matter what, you’re going to pass hundreds of other cars every hour. We Americans don’t exactly understand the problem because we don’t think about nationwide pollution, we usually only think about the city or state we live in. It’s a real problem that we don’t think about how we humans really affect planet earth. “With a jolt I realized that the world is full of such cities, whose fossil-fuel-driven lights cause our planet to blaze into the night sky” (Flannery). “The bottom line is that we insult the environment a lot faster than we understand the consequences. When you do that, you’re guaranteed to have some nasty surprises” (Roan).

Big businesses, mostly oil companies, shipping corporations, and any company that makes their money, and directly impacts the environment in any way probably wouldn’t support this global warming theory. If the theory be true Politian’s would be running scared. “Some time this century, the day will arrive when the human influence on the climate will overwhelm all natural factors. Then, the insurance industry and the courts will no longer be able to talk of acts of God, because even the most unreasonable of us could have foreseen the consequences. Instead, the judiciary will be faces with apportioning guilt and responsibility for human actions resulting from the new climate. And that, I think, will change everything” (Flannery). It has already been proven that certain people in the government have used their power to keep Carbon Dioxide from being proclaimed a pollutant. I understand that money can and does corrupt a lot of people but wouldn’t you think our government would take our earth a little bit more serious. “In July 2003 three New England states announced that they would sue the federal government, and by October ten northeastern states had joined forces to sue the federal Environment Protection Agency to force regulation of CO2 as a pollutant” (Flannery).
I’ve thought about it a lot lately. What is happening with the weather and how much of an impact have humans had on it. I thought to myself, there are plenty of teachers in this school are almost experts in this subject.
I said to myself “Alright, I have Mr. Benoit’s class next, Ill ask him what he thinks”.
“Excuse me, Mr. Benoit I was wondering if I could get you take on the impact us humans have had on the environment”?
“Of course”! He says with a grin.
“What do you think could happen to our environment in the next twenty to forty years if people do not change their ways”?
He ponders the subject rubbing his chin.
“You will see shore lines DISAPPEAR, more severe weather, Massachusetts will be the next Florida, after the state sinks”.
“Globally, what could we all do to prevent the destruction of our planet and its atmosphere”?
“We would need a change in energy usage, and use renewable resources”.
“Do you believe that Global Warming is directly linked to the twenty percent of polar ice caps melting away or is it a phase the earth goes through”?
“That’s a tough question to ask, there are so many other factors that take part in global warming. But, yes I believe that the ice recession in the Arctic is connected to Global Warming”.
“Ok, next question”.
“Bringing in all of the aspects of Global Warming, what is the biggest cause for what we are experiencing today?”
“Didn’t you learn anything from my lesson on Global Warming and the Green House effect, come on nick? First of all, the exploitations of fossil fuels have been a huge dynamic since corporate America and other companies all over the world race to collect the most oil, and coal. Also because we live in an energy hungry society we don’t think about the ramifications of our actions”.
“Lastly where would you start if you were in control of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and what would be on bad course of action to take?”
“I would first start with automobiles, maybe work on a fuel cell vehicle, or an electric car to cut gas costs almost in have if you drive correctly. To take care of energy costs and to protect the environment I would work hard on solar wind energy parks, and also geothermal power plants.”

Everyone has a fear of what might happen. No one knows exactly when our time on this planet will end. No one can predict something of that magnitude. Maybe there is a way we can try and guess what is to come by trying to decode biblical tales, or any text that sparks superstition. For superstition really does affect human behavior. “Even people who understood little about science or the environment could see that the Antarctic ozone hole was a frightening phenomenon. NASA’s satellite image-the swirling dark whole surrounded by hands of color-was shown repeatedly on evening newscast” (Norman). Taking it all into consideration this world would be out of control if word got out that the world as we know it was ending because of a hole in our upper atmosphere. It simply strikes fear any where it would be heard. Mass hysteria, mass suicide, the collapse of religions all may occur in the onslaught of Armageddon.

Think twice about it next time you see a GREEN POWER ad on a build board. Think about what it stands for, what message it is trying to get across. The message is important to our lives. It’s important to every ecosystem, every organism that calls planet earth home. We must work to lower our Carbon Footprint as a planet not only individual.

Macbeth
Superstition Affects Human Behavior

The story of Macbeth is a story of a man confused with superstition and fate. His judgment affected by the three witches foreshadowing what is to come in Macbeths near future. Fate plays a huge role in this Dramatic Literature, so much of the drama that occurred during the play came from lies and prophesies brought on by the three witches, and also Lady Macbeth. Beginning (1.3.50-70) the three witches tell Macbeth and Banquo that first Macbeth will be Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and then finally King of Scotland. “Thou shalt get kings, though thou be none. So all hail, Macbeth and Banquo!”(1.3.69-70) This is another example for the witches manipulating peoples minds for their own gain. Macbeth’s inability to filter out fact from fiction will ultimately lead to his demise.

Macbeth was very confident that the witches’ prophesies were all truth and that fate would take its course. Unfortunately for Macbeth, his wife, Lady Macbeth is a manipulative, greedy women that forces Macbeth to go and assassinate King Duncan. “We will proceed no further in this business. He hath honour’d me of late; and I have bought Golden opinions fro all sorts of people, which would be worn now in their newest gloss, Not cast aside so soon” (1.7.33-37). Macbeth is obviously very cautious about his decisions. He isn’t as devoted to have Duncan killed as his wife is. But the thought of climbing the ladder of power so quickly sounded to could to let pass.

The night the murder was taking place King Duncan came to Macbeth’s castle to give him his thanks and praise .Plotting against the for so long had made Macbeth obsessed with becoming king. That very evening dinner was served to the guest of the castle. In each of Duncan’s guard’s beverages was a sedative so the King would be most vulnerable. Macbeth finally got the nerve to commit this cynical act to murder toward King Duncan. He stealthy entered the guest chambers where the king was sound asleep, stepped over the unconscious guards and approached his bedside. With an extremely eerie expression on his face Macbeth struck down one of the guards daggers with a force that rumbled through the sleeping kingdom. So detached from what he had just don’t, he had forgotten the plan. The plan was to frame the guards by placing the bloody dagger into their hands and then have them killed. Because of Macbeths sloppiness’ Lady Macbeth was forced to go back and do the job right.

Shakespeare used superstition in many important ways in Macbeth. We see that he uses figurative language to make the witches prophesies more realistic, and more believable. “Be ruthless, bold, and decisive. Laugh scornfully at the power of men-for no man born to a woman can harm Macbeth” (4.1.86-88). As if Macbeth isn’t confident enough with him self, more prophesies of his valor are being told. Shortly after the apparitions had vanished, the fear of being known by Macduff for what he had done. Macbeth had Macduff and his entire family murdered. Proving finally that the witches’ prophecies had clouded his judgment and superstition controlled his actions.
Macbeth proved to us that if in a short amount of time we are told something to be true that seems impossible, through corruption and superstition, bad things can happen. Macbeth put all of his faith into the witches’ prophecies. This ultimately led to his downfall in the end.

Macbeth’s inability to filter out fact from fiction will ultimately lead to his demise.

Macbeth was very confident* that the witches prophesies where all truth and that fate would take its course. Too bad for Macbeth that his wife, Lady Macbeth is a manipulative,* greedy women that forces Macbeth to go and assassinate King Duncan. “We will proceed no further in this business. He isn’t as devoted* to have Duncan killed as his wife is.

With an extremely eerie* expression on his face Macbeth struck down one of the guards daggers with a force that rumbled through the sleeping kingdom. William Shakespeare used superstition in many important ways in Macbeth. We see that he uses figurative* language to make the witches prophesies more realistic, and more believable.

Siddhartha's Journey By: Nick W

Siddhartha’s Journey

It all started with the Siddhartha fan club I joined a few months ago. I didn’t think any thing of it for a while till I was randomly chosen to show Siddhartha some of the attractions we Americans take part in. His agent, Tom and I talked through e-mails and he let me know that this was real and not some scam.
“Siddhartha will be flying into Bradley International airport at 4:00 am on January 18, 2009. Make sure when you se him you greet him you give him a lit incense stick and put lei over his head to show respect,” said Tom in an email.
Sid must hate me already, I can’t believe I am four hours late to pick him up. I said to myself as I was approaching the airport. He wasn’t mad at all though. He some how gathered the attention of seven beautiful women all of them stewardess, and all of were a different race.
I walked up to him and all these women, when he saw me he pushed them away and ran to me as if he had known me for years. He pulled me over and made this petite little Korean girl sit on my lap. He explained to me how he got all these girls “All I did was comment on this paper book called penthouse. This word caught my eye and made me laugh. Sexy time it really works for the lady’s when they think you only know one word”.
It took us two hours to get out of the airport kind of ridiculous since I had been 4 hours late in the first place. When we left he told me how excited he already was about American culture and how much freedom we have. I said to myself, you haven’t seen anything yet. Where I’m bringing you right now, you are going to go nuts. “Six Flags only five minutes away from here”.
I wonder if he’s going get sick on the rides, what ever we’ll see what happens.
“Just wait until we get to the water park where all the hot babes in bikinis are, just be aware of the freakishly large women soaking up all of the sun.” I said to Siddhartha
“What are bikinis Nick?” He asked.
We finally arrived at the front gates. We heard nothing but the bustling of people in and out of the park. Peoples cheers as their whipping around on coasters and other rides. (I wish you could have seen his face, he was amazed).
“Those damn Samanas are standing by a fire fasting in the woods, they are accomplishing nothing. Look where I am now I love it here thank you, thank you so much!” Said Siddhartha, with a huge grin on his face. I laughed hysterically, we hadn’t even gotten to the receptionist and he was going crazy. As we walked through the gates and past security we ran into a bit of a problem. Sid always wore nine pounds of bronze jewelry around his neck and on his hands, but its like pulling teeth to have him take them off.
It took up seven hours from when I picked him up till now but its all worth it. To start off we got in line at Scream. I let him lead the way and that’s where we ended up. To him it must have seemed like a tower to the heavens. He sat staring in awe at how magnificent the towering malice in front of him was.
“Besides Kamala’s perfect body this is the most amazing thing I have ever seen in my life”. Said Sid
I laughed hysterically at what he had said. “Just wait till we get all strapped in and the count down starts”. I said to him.
I will admit taking Siddhartha to six flags right after a fifteen hour plane ride from India. Right after we exited scream. Siddhartha ran out of the park like a bat out of hell. On his way out the gates, he threw up all over two Looney Toon mascots. Damn I hope he doesn’t get taken down by park security, to be honest Sid looked like some kind of terrorist if you asked me.
Nothing happened but it was a hell of an experience for me. I’m sure it was for him also. After a while I noticed that something was bothering Siddhartha. He told me about Kamala and how he had gotten her pregnant. They had made a child out of lust. It was really bothering him I could tell. I know what will make you happy Sid lets head to the titty bar.
“What is a titty bar?” He asked me.
“ Yeah a strip club its where us men go when we feel like getting drunk while watching beautiful women get naked and dance for us. It’s not exactly the nicest place in the world but the girls are to die for”.

College Essay

It was the first time I had ever been put in a very scary situation, a couple days after my seventh birthday. My parents had been yelling at each other for a long time. I’m sure people down the street shared thought of domestic violence but it never reached a dangerous level. This was the turning point in my life. I had grown up holding both my parents with the deepest respect. But what was about to happen made me think very differently of every thing around me. It was a couple of hours after thy stopped yelling my dad came into the kitchen, his eyes were soaked, and blood shot from the dispute earlier. He took me out to the front porch out side our slider door where my Alaskan malamute usually slept. He took me close, hugged me, than placed his hand on my shoulder and told me that him and my mother were going to be separated. I couldn’t have been any more anxious than I was. Wanting to know what he was about to say and the fear I had of what he was about to say drove me to tears.
“I’m sorry to hurt you son. This isn’t about you two at all. Me and your mother have lost the love we had for each other in the beginning.”
“Who are we going to live with?” What are we going to do?” I said to him while I had tears running down my cheek. Then of course he goes to his room packs up some things and drives off leaving me and my mother.
This above all things affected my life the most. Before that I day I didn’t know that married couples could get divorced. It was a grim reality dropped on my head. I didn’t know what to do with it. I wanted to be with my father, but the law made me live and move with my mother and sister. The worst part about it was losing my friends that I made in elementary school. My mom eventually moved to New Haven Connecticut, an hour away from where we had first lived. My mom had been given a job at Yale University, this is why I do not blame her at all for moving us away from our father because she only wanted to take care of us.
Moving to Connecticut wasn’t all bad I met a lot of new people that eventually became good friends that I still have even though I moved back to Mass. While I lived in Connecticut I wasn’t isolated from my father at all. I was able to see my dad every other weekend which if that didn’t happen I would probably go crazy and move out of my moms house at a younger age.
These are the things that affected my life the most, for good, and for bad.
